Sylmar-based implantable medical device maker Second Sight Medical Products reported that it had its first commercial implants of its medical devices in Italy, at two centers in Camposampiero and Florence. Second Sight Medical is developing implantable device used to treat outer retinal degeneration and blindness. The company said it has now implanted its devices in more than 100 individuals worldwide.

Sylmar-based Second Sight Medical Products, which is developing implantable medical devices to help treat outer retinal degeneration, said it has implanted its first devices in France. According to the company, three of the centers approved to implant its Argus II Retinal Prosthesis System have done so in France, under that country’s national healthcare reimbursement program. Second Sight’s medical device treats patients with retinitis pigmentosa (RP). Second Sight Medical said taht RP often results in nearly complete blindness, and affects roughly 24,000 French people. Second Sight Medical is led by Dr. Robert Greenberg.

Sylmar-based Second Sight Medical, a medical devices maker developing treatments for outer retinal degenerations, such as retinitis pigmentosa, filed for an IPO this week, saying that it is looking to raise up to $45M in an IPO on the Nasdaq Capital Market. The IPO is being underwritten by MDB Capital Group. The company said it expects to offer its stock at $9.00 per share, trading under the symbol EYES. Second Sight Medical is backed by medical devices mogul Alfred E. Mann.
